The USMNT was mercilessly thrashed 4-0 by Switzerland, and it could have been worse. The Swiss team squandered several chances against a sluggish U.S. side that was completely outplayed in possession, attack, and defense this Tuesday at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
Switzerland displayed their powerful arsenal early in the match, with goals from Dan Ndoye in the 13th minute, Aebischer in the 23rd, Embolo in the 33rd, and Manzambi in the 36th, completely overwhelming the USMNT. The Swiss ran circles around the American defense, leaving Harriel, Zimmerman, McKienzie, and Arfsten as mere spectators for the four goals.
Swiss attacks focused heavily on the flanks, where Harriel and Arfsten were unable to stop the Swiss locomotives.
Amid the Swiss dance, the second half ended with a sunken and subdued U.S. side, booed off the field by their fans, who jeered and hurled insults as the team walked off to the locker rooms.
Second Half
To counter Switzerland’s relentless assault, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino made five tactical changes at halftime. He replaced Arfsten with Tillman, Agyemang with Aaronson, Tim Ream with B. Aaronson, and Diego Luna with White.
More than Pochettino’s adjustments, it was Switzerland easing off the gas that allowed the U.S. to improve in ball possession slightly. With a comfortable 4-0 lead, the Swiss played a more controlled and tactical second half, expending little energy while keeping the Americans from creating any real danger.
Swiss coach Murat Yakin made his own substitutions in the 46th minute, bringing on Miro Muheim for Ricardo Rodríguez and Gartenmann for Akanji. In the 65th minute, he introduced Lucas Blondel for Schmidt and Sow Granit for Xhaka. At the 72nd minute, Aurèle Amenda replaced Nico Elvedi and Zeki Amdouni came on for M. Aebischer.
Failing to turn the match around, Pochettino made another change in the 75th minute, bringing on Damion Downs for Berhalter. Tonight’s squad looked lifeless and sluggish — something Pochettino will need to analyze deeply, especially since the starting lineup featured five changes compared to the one used against Turkey, which had delivered a better performance.
