The MLS All-Stars claimed a convincing 3-1 victory over Liga MX in the 2025 All-Star Game, held at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Despite having less possession, the MLS side proved more effective in front of goal, capitalizing on their scoring chances with precision.
The goals for the MLS came from Sam Surridge (28’), Tai Baribo (51’), and Diego Luna (80’). Liga MX managed to pull one back through young talent Gilberto Mora (64’), who impressed with his energy and movement.
While Liga MX controlled the majority of possession, their attacks lacked the final touch and cohesion near the goal. Their offense often stalled before posing a real threat in the box. On the other hand, the MLS team, led by coach Nico Estévez of Austin FC, was more direct and dangerous in transition, creating several clear-cut chances.
Among the standout performers for the MLS were Diego Luna, Jacob Harsften, and goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, who delivered a series of brilliant saves in the second half, showcasing his shot-stopping skills and composure under pressure.
Liga MX, coached by André Jardine of Club América, highlighted individual talent in Mora, Alejandro Zendejas, Ramos, and Carlos Ditta, who combined well to create attacking plays but failed to convert them into goals.
A notable absence from the game was Lionel Messi, whose non-participation stirred media attention. According to MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Messi missed the match due to accumulated physical fatigue. The Argentine superstar, currently with Inter Miami, was expected to feature but was ultimately left out for precautionary reasons.
Also missing was Jordi Alba, another Inter Miami player, who was selected but couldn’t participate due to ongoing recovery from a long-term injury that has kept him off the pitch for several months.
The 2025 edition of the All-Star Game once again reflected the growing competitiveness between MLS and Liga MX, with the North American league showcasing its continued rise in quality and depth.
