Inter Miami Crowned MLS Champions After 3–1 Comeback Win Over Vancouver Whitecaps; Messi Reaches 48 Official Titles.
Inter Miami made history on Saturday night, securing their first-ever MLS Cup after defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3–1 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The victory also marked Lionel Messi’s 48th official career title, adding another milestone to his legendary résumé.
Vancouver struck first in the 60th minute through Ali Ahmed, capitalizing on Miami’s struggles in midfield and their difficulty recovering possession.
The equalizer came moments later when Edier Ocampo deflected a powerful shot from Tadeo Allende into his own net, a play initiated by a sharp pass from Messi. The own goal revived Miami’s hopes and shifted the momentum of the match.
The comeback was completed in the 71st minute, when Rodrigo De Paul finished low to the right post after another precise assist from Messi, igniting celebrations throughout the stadium.
As Vancouver pushed desperately for an equalizer, Tadeo Allende sealed the match with a clinical strike in the 90+6 minute, once again assisted brilliantly by Messi, putting the final 3–1 scoreline out of reach.
Despite the result, the match was largely controlled by Vancouver, who dominated possession for long stretches and created the clearest opportunities.
Miami’s midfield looked slow and physically taxed, with several veterans showing signs of wear as they struggled to contain Vancouver’s dynamic transitions.
Thomas Müller delivered a standout performance for the Whitecaps, working effectively alongside Belhalter and Ahmed, though the team suffered a blow when R. Priso Maboungue left the field injured in the 67th minute.
In a match marked by high physical intensity—four yellow cards for Vancouver and two for Miami—the Whitecaps once again fell short in a decisive moment.
The team closes a bittersweet year after reaching two major finals: the Concacaf Champions Cup, where they were defeated 5–0 by Cruz Azul, and now the MLS Cup, without lifting a trophy in either. This latest disappointment, suffered on the road in Florida, deepens the frustration for the Canadian side.
