Portugal eased past the United States men’s national team with a comfortable 2–0 win in an international friendly on Tuesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.
Despite expectations of a heavier scoreline, the European side controlled the match without exerting full intensity, finishing with just five shots on target while maintaining most of the possession.
The gap in quality was evident throughout, as Portugal dictated the tempo and earned roughly eight corner kicks. The U.S., lacking attacking creativity, focused on a defensive approach built on physical play, committing around 15 fouls in an effort to disrupt their opponent. That strategy helped limit further damage, as several Portuguese chances were blocked before becoming serious threats.
Portugal opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Trincão, following a precise assist from Bruno Fernandes. The lead was extended in the 59th minute when João Félix finished another well-crafted play, again set up by Fernandes, who proved instrumental in both goals.
U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino made multiple changes, introducing up to nine substitutions, but the team showed limited offensive response. Ultimately, the United States escaped with a manageable defeat, as Portugal appeared content to secure the result without pressing for a more emphatic victory.
