HIGHLIGHTS
The United States won 1-0 today against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas, in a dull match where the Saudis played defensively, and the Americans rotated the ball without managing to break through the opposing goal.
Pochettino’s tactical approach revolved largely around exploiting Arfsten’s and McLynn’s runs down the flanks. However, this focus on wide play limited the impact of Diego Luna and Luca De La Torre in midfield, reducing their chances to deliver key passes or break through the center.
In the first half, the USMNT struggled to create clear chances inside the penalty area. Their combinations were repeatedly stopped in the final third by a well-organized and defensive Saudi Arabian team, which allowed very few opportunities or quick transitions.
As a result, the offense centered mainly on the wings, with solitary forward Agyeman leading the attack. Despite the effort, the USMNT found it difficult to penetrate Saudi Arabia’s disciplined defensive block during this period.
Second Half
In the second half, Saudi Arabia improved and managed to string together some offensive plays, though none were converted into goals. Fortunately for the United States
The USMNT prevailed, an they got three points thanks to a goal by Chris Richards, who capitalized on a well-worked pass from the tireless S. Belhalter.
Pochettino will seemingly continue to rely on a flank-based style of play, where he has found two key pieces for his system in Arfsten and McGlyn.
Despite the slow pace of the match, that single goal was enough for the USMNT to secure six points in the Gold Cup Group and claim first place.
