Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, forward for Liverpool, died early this Thursday morning along with his brother André Jota in a traffic accident in Cenardilla, Zamora, Spain.
The Portugal national team player was driving a Lamborghini that caught fire after veering off the road while heading to Santander to catch a ferry bound for England, according to Diario de Castilla y León.
The Liverpool player had recently married Rut Cardoso, the mother of his three young children.
With the Portugal national team, Jota made his debut in 2019. He was part of the Portuguese team that won two UEFA Nations League titles (2019 and 2025), cementing his legacy as a key figure in the national setup.
Diogo Jota had a remarkable spell with Liverpool FC, joining the club in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He quickly became a fan favorite under coach Jürgen Klopp thanks to his sharp finishing, intelligent movement, and ability to play across the front line.
Jota played in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final with Liverpool, where they lost to Real Madrid.
